Post-Publication Discussion Policy

TATEFL encourages open scholarly dialogue, constructive criticism, and responsible academic exchange concerning research published in the journal. Post-publication discussion is an important part of scholarly communication, enabling researchers and readers to examine published findings, clarify interpretations, identify potential errors, and contribute to the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.

This policy is informed by relevant publication ethics principles and guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). It applies to comments, critiques, scholarly responses, and other substantive contributions relating to articles published in TATEFL.

1. Scope and Purpose

Post-publication discussion provides an opportunity for authors, readers, researchers, and other members of the academic community to critically examine published research.

TATEFL welcomes scholarly contributions addressing the theoretical foundations, research methods, findings, interpretations, originality, academic significance, and ethical integrity of published articles. The objectives of this policy are to:

  • Encourage critical engagement with published research.
  • Promote transparency, accountability, and academic integrity.
  • Facilitate clarification of theoretical, methodological, and interpretive issues.
  • Identify potential errors, inaccuracies, or ethical concerns.
  • Encourage constructive dialogue between authors and readers.
  • Support appropriate corrections to the scholarly record.

Post-publication discussion should contribute to academic understanding and knowledge development. Personal disputes, unsupported allegations, and inappropriate criticism will not be considered acceptable forms of scholarly exchange.

2. Submission of Post-Publication Comments

Readers and researchers may submit comments or scholarly responses concerning articles published in TATEFL through the journal's official communication channels.

Submissions should:

  • Identify the original article by its title, author or authors, publication year, and DOI or URL, where available.
  • Present a clear, concise, and relevant scholarly argument.
  • Support substantive claims with appropriate evidence and references.
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, and objective tone.
  • Disclose relevant conflicts of interest.
  • Confirm that the submission is original and complies with applicable copyright and publication ethics requirements.

Comments may address research design, methodology, data interpretation, theoretical arguments, literature coverage, conclusions, and research integrity. TATEFL may establish requirements concerning length, formatting, references, and supporting documentation. Authors may be asked to revise their submissions before further consideration.

3. Editorial Assessment and Review

All post-publication contributions will undergo editorial assessment to evaluate their relevance, originality, scholarly merit, clarity, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

The Editor-in-Chief or a designated editor will determine the appropriate assessment procedure. Independent experts or external reviewers may be consulted when specialized academic expertise is required.

TATEFL may decline submissions that:

  • Fall outside the scope of the original article or the journal.
  • Lack sufficient scholarly substance or supporting evidence.
  • Contain defamatory statements, personal attacks, harassment, or abusive language.
  • Present knowingly false or demonstrably misleading allegations.
  • Violate copyright, confidentiality, or other applicable ethical requirements.
  • Contain irrelevant, duplicative, or otherwise unsuitable material.

Editorial decisions will be based on scholarly merit, relevance, supporting evidence, and ethical considerations rather than on whether the contribution agrees or disagrees with the conclusions of the original article.

4. Right of Response by Original Authors

When a post-publication contribution raises substantive questions or criticisms about a published article, TATEFL may invite the original author or authors to respond.

Responses should address the issues raised directly, provide relevant clarification or supporting evidence, and comply with the journal's standards of academic integrity and professional conduct.

TATEFL seeks to provide a fair opportunity for meaningful academic exchange. Where appropriate, the original comment and the authors' response may be published together or linked to the original article to facilitate balanced discussion.

The publication of a response does not automatically establish that the original article is incorrect. Similarly, a critical comment does not, by itself, demonstrate that research misconduct has occurred. Each contribution will be assessed on its own merits.

5. Publication and Accessibility

Accepted post-publication comments and responses may be published as scholarly correspondence, commentaries, or other appropriate formats determined by the editorial team.

Where technically and editorially feasible, TATEFL will establish clear links between published comments, responses, and the original article to help readers access the relevant materials and understand the context of the discussion.

Published contributions will be subject to the journal's applicable editorial, copyright, licensing, and publication ethics policies. Contributors remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of their submissions.

TATEFL will not reject legitimate scholarly criticism solely because it challenges the methodology, interpretation, or conclusions of a previously published article.

6. Corrections and Concerns Regarding Published Articles

When a post-publication comment or other communication identifies a potential error, inaccuracy, ethical violation, or concern affecting the validity or reliability of a published article, TATEFL will assess the matter in accordance with its publication ethics policies and relevant COPE guidance.

Depending on the nature and seriousness of the concern, the journal may:

  • Request clarification or supporting documentation from the authors.
  • Consult independent experts or relevant research specialists.
  • Seek information from the authors' affiliated institutions or research ethics committees.
  • Publish a correction when an identifiable error requires amendment but does not invalidate the overall findings.
  • Issue an expression of concern when substantial questions remain unresolved and readers need to be informed while further investigation is conducted.
  • Retract an article when its findings are unreliable or when serious ethical or publication violations warrant retraction.
  • Publish another appropriate editorial notice to clarify the status or reliability of the scholarly record.

Editorial action will be proportionate to the available evidence and the seriousness of the concern. TATEFL will distinguish between legitimate scholarly disagreement, honest error, and suspected or established research misconduct.

When an investigation falls primarily within the responsibility of a research institution or another competent authority, the journal may refer the matter to the relevant body and cooperate as appropriate. TATEFL will make its own editorial decisions regarding the published record based on the available evidence and applicable publication ethics principles.

7. Research Misconduct and Ethical Concerns

If a post-publication contribution raises credible concerns about plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, inappropriate authorship, citation manipulation, peer review manipulation, or other forms of potential research misconduct, TATEFL will follow its established Allegations of Research Misconduct Policy.

All allegations will be assessed fairly and confidentially, and the individuals concerned will be given an appropriate opportunity to respond. An allegation will not be treated as proven solely because it has been submitted or published as a comment.

Where necessary, TATEFL may consult independent experts, contact relevant institutions, or seek advice from appropriate research ethics bodies. Subsequent editorial action will be guided by the available evidence and the need to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.

8. Confidentiality and Conflicts of Interest

TATEFL will handle correspondence and supporting documentation relating to post-publication discussion responsibly and maintain confidentiality where appropriate, subject to the requirements of a fair assessment and applicable legal or ethical obligations.

Individuals involved in assessing or publishing comments and responses must disclose relevant actual or potential conflicts of interest. Editors or reviewers whose impartiality may be compromised will be excluded from the decision-making process where appropriate.

The journal will take reasonable measures to ensure that editorial decisions remain independent, fair, and based on scholarly and ethical considerations.

9. Appeals and Complaints

Authors or contributors who believe that an editorial decision concerning a post-publication submission was made unfairly may submit a reasoned appeal to the TATEFL editorial office.

Appeals should explain the grounds for reconsideration and provide relevant supporting information. Where practicable, an editor or designated representative who was not directly involved in the original decision will assess the appeal.

Complaints concerning editorial conduct or potential breaches of publication ethics will be handled in accordance with the journal's applicable policies and procedures.

10. Commitment to Transparency and Scholarly Integrity

TATEFL is committed to maintaining a transparent, respectful, and intellectually open environment in which published research can be examined, questioned, and improved through evidence-based discussion.

The journal recognizes that responsible post-publication discussion strengthens scholarly communication, supports the correction of errors, encourages academic collaboration, and promotes trust in research and publication.

All post-publication contributions will be handled in accordance with this policy, the journal's editorial procedures, and relevant publication ethics principles and guidance issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Through this policy, TATEFL seeks to protect the integrity of the scholarly record and promote responsible academic exchange in English language teaching, language education, and related fields.
