Allegations of Research Misconduct
Research misconduct includes fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, citation manipulation, and other serious violations of research integrity in the conduct, evaluation, reporting, or publication of research. TATEFL is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record and ensuring that all manuscripts and published articles meet appropriate standards of academic honesty and ethical conduct.
When allegations of research misconduct or other significant irregularities arise in relation to a submitted or published manuscript, the Editor and Editorial Board will handle the matter fairly, objectively, and confidentially, following applicable publication ethics principles and relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Assessment and Investigation
The process begins with a preliminary assessment to determine whether the allegation has a reasonable basis and falls within the scope of research misconduct. The Editor may also consider any relevant conflicts of interest that could affect the impartiality of the individuals involved in raising or investigating the allegation.
If the initial assessment indicates a reasonable possibility of misconduct, the corresponding author will be informed of the concerns and invited to provide a detailed explanation on behalf of all coauthors. The Editor may request supporting documents, original research data, additional analyses, or clarification from the authors. Where necessary, independent experts, including statistical reviewers, may be consulted to assist in evaluating the evidence.
Editorial Decisions and Corrective Actions
Following the investigation, the Editor will determine the appropriate action based on the available evidence and the seriousness of the issue. A manuscript found to involve research misconduct may be rejected.
If the concerns relate to a published article, appropriate actions may include publishing a correction, issuing an expression of concern, retracting the article, or taking other measures consistent with publication ethics guidelines. Any correction or retraction notice will be appropriately linked to the original publication to maintain transparency and preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.
Institutional Involvement
TATEFL recognizes that institutions have an important role in investigating allegations of research misconduct involving their researchers. Where appropriate, the journal may refer the matter to the relevant institution or request that the institution conduct a formal investigation. The journal's editorial assessment and decisions will be based on the available evidence and applicable publication ethics standards.
Commitment to Research Integrity
Authors, editors, reviewers, institutions, and the journal share responsibility for upholding research integrity. Through the fair assessment of allegations and the implementation of appropriate corrective measures, TATEFL seeks to protect the credibility, accuracy, and reliability of the scholarly record.
